On Being a Photographer
The importance of choosing a subject to photograph. http://www.lenswork.com/obpexc.htm This free sample comes from a book that has become a classic of frank wisdom on the craft of producing important images. A small paperback, it is available at this writing on amazon.com for $489.00 new or $555.00 used. You might want to get the on-demand version from LensWork for $12.95.

Learning Software

Throughout your career, you will either continue to learn or be left in the dust. Knowing how to get information, absorb it, and put it into practice once you are not a college student is, well, the goal of being a college student. While there are other areas of your education that may allow you to coast for a few years, imaging software probably is not one of those areas. Despite an effort to introduce you to the basic tools of the trade, you are now just scratching the surface. To become proficient as well as to keep up with changes, you will need to have a way to continue your education, most likely squeezing it in between other obligations, and sometimes doing so in a hurry.

The best way I've found to do this is through online lessons, and the best online lessons I've found are at lynda.com. There you will find tutorials on practically any topic, to any degree of detail from beginner to expert. Lynda.com is a subscription service, $25 a month last time I checked, which allows you unlimited access to all of their online tutorial. Before you sign up, you can try a few samples that are made available for free from the Adobe Learning Site. Also, don't forget to check the Help menu on Adobe applications.

Once you have your own computer and have purchased software, you will run into situations where things don't work as expected. Unless you have someone on staff to answer your questions, you will probably have to learn to troubleshoot them yourself. Start at the Adobe Forums, where you will be likely to find others who have had the same problem you have. If not, experts are waiting to help you out. Be nice though, check to make sure the question has not already been asked!
